muriel's wedding is one of my favorite movies about friendship and change. it is a comfort film of mine, the kind you take out on a particularly blue day.
i remember being surprised at it when i first saw it in the theatre, as it was described as a comedy - as in laugh out loud comedy (i remember the positioning of the ads and the by-lines they would print in the paper). although there are moments of humor, it is definitely more of the dark comedy genre (a favorite category of mine), or possibly a dramedy (though i hardly hear that as a film description).
it is in my list of films that show a real and honest look at friendship, the good and the bad of it, and the shifts and connections that occur in a real lifetime kind of friendship. it reminds me a bit of an australian take on a wes anderson film, but more skewed to the female perspective.
the film stars two of my favorite female actors, rachel griffiths and toni collette, and has an abba-loaded soundtrack - in all honesty, how could i not love it?
the above is one of my favorite scenes.
nicole's having an affair with chook. muriel saw them fucking in the laundry on your wedding day. stick your drink up your arse, tania. i'd rather swallow razor blades than have a drink with you. oh by the way, i'm not alone, i'm with muriel ~ rhonda
